Rookie Angge Poyos leads UST past UE

In a battle of promising rookies, Angge Poyos and University of Santo Tomas prevailed over Casiey Dongallo and University of the East, 18-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-22, in the first round of the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Golden Tigresses bucked a slow start to complete a reverse sweep and pick up their second win. 

Poyos, who made a good account of herself in the opening day of the tournament by helping UST take down National University Lady Bulldogs, didn’t take long in improving her debuting tally of 16 points by unloading a 24-piece in only her second UAAP match. 

The 20-year-old outside hitter scattered an all-around display built on 19 attacks, two blocks and three service aces on top of 11 receptions and eight digs. 

Though the rookie-led UST ultimately come out the better side, there was no lack of effort on UE’s end with Dongallo delivering an equally brilliant performance of 23 points highlighted by 22 kills that went with 13 digs. 

The 18-year-old Cebuana became the highest scoring rookie in her debut with her 27-piece after steering the Lady Warriors to their first win against the Ateneo Blue Eagles in 14 years last week. 

UE, considered the tournament’s doormats in the past decade, continued its breakthrough after taking the opening set in exciting fashion.  

The España side then picked up its pace and seized control in the sets that followed in the eventual victory.

Both squads displayed balanced offensive efforts with Regina Jurado and Xyza Gula scoring 16 and 10 points, respectively, for UST. 

In the losing cause, UE found itself backed up by Riza Nogales and KC Cepada with 10 markers each.
