Continue to uphold the legacy of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
This is the Liberal Party's (LP) message for the upcoming commemoration of the 38th anniversary of the People Power revolution that took place along Epifano de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) from Feb. 22 to 25, 1986.
“It is an enduring legacy which Filipinos must cherish, defend, and uphold against the malevolence of historical distortion and revisionism, and the importuning of those who would attempt the repetition of an inordinate aberration,” LP President Albay 1st district Rep. Edcel Lagman said in a statement Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Citing all the struggles and sacrifices to realize the EDSA revolution, Lagman told the public that the historic event wasn't just a “brilliant spark of a spontaneous moment”.
Instead, it was a culmination of a momentum that was built up for 14 years on the back of Filipino patriots who “steadfastly and courageously opposed and rejected the atrocity, repression, and profligacy of the Marcos Sr. martial law regime”, he said.
The country’s leader for 20 years, the late former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. became the Philippines' strongman.
Referring to the bloodless revolution, Lagman underscored the public’s capacity to change the status quo with their sheer determination to reclaim the country.
“It was the ouster of a dictator, not through the force of arms, but impelled by the collective determination and irrevocable resolve of Filipinos to regain freedom and democracy,” the Bicolano noted.
