General Romeo Brawner Jr., Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), has rendered his final salute to the six soldiers who paid the ultimate price during an armed encounter between the Philippine Army and Dawlah Islamiyah-Maute Group (DI-MG) fighters in Munai, Lanao del Norte last Feb. 18.
Brawner paid respects to the deceased soldiers identified as Corporals Rey Anthony Salvador, Reland Tapinit and Rodel Mobida; Private First Class Arnel Tornito; and Privates Michael John Lumingkit and James Porras, all members of the 44th Infantry Battalion (44IB) under the 1st Infantry Division (1ID) during a vigil at Camp Major Cesar Sang-an in Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur on Tuesday, February 20.
The military chief condoled with the families and relatives of the troops as he assured them of the AFP's full support and assistance.
"This is a very sad event. We lost some of our soldiers. Wala pong kapalit ang buhay ng tao that's why nandito po kami upang personal na ipaabot ang aming pakikiramay at ang aming buong suporta sa mga pamilya ng mga sundalo na namatay (Nothing can compensate for a human life that's why we are here to personally extend our condolences and full support to the families of the slain soldiers)," Brawner said.
Aside from financial assistance, the AFP will also help the children and siblings of the deceased soldiers to finish their studies or enter the military service.
"We will extend all the help that we can extend to them," Brawner noted.
The soldiers died in a gunbattle in Brgy. Ramain in Munai town while pursuing the remaining DI-MG suspects behind the bombing of the Mindanao State University last year in Marawi City.
At least three alleged DI-MG fighters also died while four soldiers who got injured were already in a stable condition.
Meanwhile, the AFP has implemented tighter security measures at the border of Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur as pursuit operations were ongoing against the members of the DI-MG who managed to flee after the series of encounters with state forces.
