VP Duterte cites Filipino-Chinese business sector's contribution to education

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte on Tuesday, Feb. 20, underscored the role of the Filipino-Chinese business community in promoting and investing in the country’s education sector.

In her keynote speech for the Chinese-Filipino Business Club Inc. (CFBCI) 13th Biennial National Convention held at the historic The Manila Hotel, the official lauded the Filipino-Chinese business club for “being a steadfast supporter of cultural understanding, business developments, and social responsibility.”
But she especially has high regards for the community for its contribution to the country’s education sector, even providing scholarships for young Filipinos.
“Beyond business, your significant contributions to social developments, particularly in education, jobs creation, are commendable. Maraming salamat sa iba’t ibang businesses at organizations ninyo (Thank you very much to your various businesses and organizations),” Duterte, the event’s guest of honor, said.
Applauding initiatives like the “Pagharap sa Pangarap College Scholarship” program, the Vice President noted that such projects don’t only provide financial support but also “nurtures character development and life skills among students.”
“Education is the cornerstone of progress and your commitment to provide scholarships for the young Filipinos is not just a strategic investment but an investment as well in the future of our country,” the official said.
“Mre importantly, it empowers the scholars to pursue their dreams and contribute meaningfully to our society,” she added.
Duterte cited the business community’s “courageous journey towards the better, brighter future” as a reminder of the “importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of uncertainties.”
This, she stressed, was similar to how the Department of Education’s (DepEd) MATATAG agenda was crafted.
The official also thanked the CFBCI for its support to the Marcos administration and her work in the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and her concurrent role of education chief.
This year’s theme is “Journey Towards a Brighter Future.”
During the event, Philtrust Bank received a Plaque of Appreciation as the event’s major sponsor. Philtrust Bank President Dr. Jaime Laya and Manila Hotel Chairman Basilio Yap also received a plaque of appreciation from CFBCI.
CFBCI President Stephan Tan Sia, CFBCI Executive Vice President Samuel Lee Uy, and Manila Bulletin President Dr. Emilio C. Yap III attended the event. Also present were Senators Mark Villar and Francis Tolentino.
Established in Jan. 1998, the CFBCI is one of the prominent non-profit organizations in the Filipino-Chinese community with a membership of more than 300 individuals coming from the law, finance, manufacturing, real estate development, travel and tourism, agriculture, chemical, hardware, construction, banking, and other sectors.
