Taal Main Crater Lake under scrutiny: Phivolcs scientists conduct periodic survey
A "periodic survey" was conducted by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) scientists from the Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division on Tuesday, Feb. 20, in the Main Crater Lake (MCL) in Taal Volcano Island (TVI) to know its current state through "on-the-ground" data.

Phivolcs said the scientists took the measurements of temperature changes in the MCL through a thermal camera from a good point of view at the Daang Kastila trail located at the northern rim of the Main Crater.

"Scientists use protective gear to safeguard them from potentially harmful magmatic gases emitted by Taal," Phivolcs said.

Phivolcs monitored the second-highest record of sulfur dioxide emission since 2024 has started at a total of 14,211 per day on Feb. 19.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol said the emission was not an indication of a possible volcanic eruption.
