Filter is something one usually find on social media. As we now live in a digital world where aesthetics and curated feeds are dominating, filters enhance an image, whether it is a picture of a scenic view or a photo of oneself. The things, having that flawless look is hard to achieve in real life. But not until the mid-2010s when a new makeup technique was born, promising a snatched look that hides facial lines and creases while highlighting one’s bone structure and other features.

Enter the baking technique, one of the dominating beauty trends of that era. Beauty vloggers on Youtube posted their many tricks on how to achieve its smooth finish by blending concealer and foundation and locking the look with a dose of loose powder. Years later, baking is still something many beauty girls do, especially the on-the-go ladies, for its long-lasting effect. And if you too don’t have the time for touch-ups and have been wanting to try baking, Singaporean makeup artist Mashita Amdam is here to help you. During the launch of Huda Beauty in the Philippines, the beauty guru shares her tips and hacks for achieving the perfect snatched look.

1. Prep your skin

It is a cardinal rule in beauty to prepare your skin before applying make-up. For Mashita, it goes beyond just cleansing and moisturizing. Her tip is to exfoliate. This will help remove the buildup of dead skin cells. Primer is a must too. Her pick is Huda Beauty’s Water Jelly Hydrating Face Primer.

“We have this wonderful water jelly product. Not only does it help your makeup last longer, it also gives your skin hydration,” she says. “When your skin is hydrated, it will help avoid patchiness and your makeup to not be cakey on the skin.”

2. Invest in the right tools

Brushes and beauty blenders are essential tools in baking your makeup. As she said, “If you have the right tools, makeup application becomes a breeze.” The brand has loads of brushes to choose from, but she preferred the Bake and Blend Dual-Ended Setting Complexion Brush. The brush is dual-ended. Its dense end is suited for applying foundation, while the fluffy end is perfect for buffing excess powder.

Her go-to foundation is the brand’s #FauxFilter Luminous Matte Foundation. It is not sticky and sweat-proof and transfer-proof feature makes it perfect for Filipinas. “It is long-wearing, up to 24 hours,” Mashita says. “It is perfect for women like us who are on-the-go and don't have a lot of time for touch up frequently. It is long-lasting and buildable.”

When using a beauty blender, her pro-tip is to damp the sponge a little so it won’t absorb much of the foundation and to give a more natural finish on the skin.

3. Know your skin tone

When finding the right makeup product for baking, Mashimata highlights the importance of knowing one’s skin tone—are they on the cool or warm side or do they have a more golden or yellow tone? The good thing is that Huda Beauty products come in a range of colors to suit one’s skin tone. Its #FauxFilter Luminous Matte Concealer, for example, comes in 29 shades to help everyone with their snatched look. To do that, the makeup artist said to apply the product on the outer corner and inner eyes, the inner and outer corners of the nose, the sides of the lips, and the chin.

4. A little goes a long way

When we watch beauty vloggers do their baking, we can see them applying a load of loose powder to set their makeup. And it is just right because they need to present the effect on camera. But for an everyday look, Mashita says that a little product goes a long way. According to her, one should use the brand’s Easy Bake Loose Baking and Setting Powder for its subtle color corrector and brightening effect.

“A little goes a long way. Remember to remove the excess product before applying it to the skin. Press it and blend under the eye area, laugh line, nose area (to avoid oiliness), and under the cheek and crease area of the eyes. Let it sit for three to five minutes and buff it.”
