Manila to implement ‘no permit, no rally’ on EDSA Day

Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan said the city government of Manila will implement a “no permit, no rally” policy on the anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on Feb. 25.

She noted that People’s Park or Freedom Park beside Liwasang Bonifacio in Ermita, Manila is among the areas that require permits from protesters before staging a caravan.

“Kung wala ho talaga kayong na secure na permit, hindi ho talaga kayo maaari sa kung saan na gusto niyo na lugar, (If you did not secure a permit, you will not be able to conduct your activity in your desired area)” she added.

Lacuna-Pangan said that other local governments will also implement the same policy in their cities.

She assured Manileños of a peaceful and orderly celebration of EDSA Day.

She added that she had not received any requests for a rally in Manila, as of Monday, Feb. 19.

EDSA Day is a commemoration of the series of demonstrations held from Feb. 22 to 25, 1986, which led to the ouster of former President Ferdinand Marcos.

In 2023, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. removed EDSA Day from the list of holidays.
