A cargo vessel sank off Coron, Palawan on Monday morning, Feb. 19, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.
PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armando Balilo said 14 crew members of MV Amelia Kyle-1 were rescued by the crew of fishing boat (FB) Mommy Rose I after the vessel sank three nautical miles off Bantac Island.
"Based on the initial investigation, the distressed vessel sank due to rough sea conditions," a report from the PCG said.
Fortunately, FB Mommy Rose I was in the vicinity when the incident occurred so it managed to save the cargo vessel's crew around 10:30 a.m.
FB Mommy Rose I then sent a radio communication to her sister ship, FB Mommy Rose V, about the incident. The captain of FB Mommy Rose V, Pedro Samtuele, called the PCG to assist the rescued crew.
The PCG deployed personnel from its marine environmental protection unit in Palawan to assess the vicinity waters of Bantac Island for possible traces of oil spill.
Details as to the flag of the cargo vessel, its origin and destination, as well as the nationality of the rescued crew are yet to be confirmed by the PCG as of writing.
The PCG has also launched a follow up operation to determine if there were more crew members needing rescue.
