Binay to gov't: Prioritize NAIA rehab over name change

Senator Maria Lourdes Nancy Binay urged the government to prioritize the rehabilitation of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) over proposals to rename the airport terminal.

 

Binay made the call following reports the consortium led by the San Miguel Corp. (SMC) won the bidding for the P170.6-billion NAIA rehabilitation project. 

 

According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the SMC SAP & Co. Consortium won the public-private partnership project after it proposed an 82.16-percent  revenue sharing scheme to the government.

 

As far as she is concerned, authorities should consider shelving proposals to change its name and instead concentrate on the airport’s modernization.

 

“Siguro bago natin pag-usapan ang pagpapalit ng pangalan ay tutukan muna natin ang pag-aayos ng NAIA. First step itong na-award na, and hopefully within a year ay may makikita na tayong improvement pagdating dito sa ating airport (Before we consider changing its name, maybe it’s time to focus first on fixing NAIA. This award is just the first step and hopefully within a year we will be able to see improvements within our airport),” she said.

 

“Sa akin itong usapin ng pagpapalit ng pangalan ay hindi pa napapanahon, at hindi na dapat natin pagaksayahan ng panahon ang ganyang pagpapalit (Discussions on changing its name is untimely, and I believe we shouldn’t waste time considering it),” Binay said during an interview on Sunday.

 

The senator also warned that changing the name of NAIA will potentially bring about negative implications in the international community and or confuse foreign visitors.

 

“Malilito na naman ang mga turista natin dahil pabago-bago ang pangalan ng airport (Tourists will be confused because of the name change),” she said.

 

Binay also warned any proposal to rename NAIA would have to undergo a rigorous process at the National Historical Commission. 

 

“Kumbaga dumaan naman yan sa proseso bago napalitan ang pangalan at naging Ninoy Aquino International Airport (It went through a rigorous process before the airport was renamed as NAIA),” Binay pointed out.

 

It was expelled Negros Oriental 3rd District Rep. Arnolfo Teves, Jr. who earlier filed House Bill No. 610, which seeks to rename NAIA after the late president Ferdinand E. Marcos, the incumbent President’s father and namesake.
