'Anong connect?' Nograles questions claim that Davao politics played role in SMNI's fate

House Assistant Majority Leader Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) Party-list Rep. Migs Nograles has assailed the claim that Davao politics have something to do with the franchise woes being experienced by TV network SMNI.

"What does politics have to do with violations of their franchise and other laws? What are they implying by relating these personalities and politics to their network?" Rep. Nograles said in a statement Monday, Feb. 19.

The lady solon was reacting to claims made by lawyer and Iloilo congressman Rolex Suplico that local politics in Davao City may have played a part in the network's current troubles.

The people behind SMNI are known to be close to the Duterte family of Davao. Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, founder of the network, is identified as the spiritual adviser of former president Rodrigo Duterte.

The Nograles family--the longtime rival of the Dutertes--is allegedly planning to challenge incumbent Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte in the local elections next year, as per Suplico.

Rumor has it that this challenger would be Rep. Nograles. She quickly shot this down.

"I have already addressed this before in my social media pages, I do not plan to run for mayor and I do not understand bakit may pangsasabong ginagawa between the families. Nakakatakot mga implications na walang mga basehan," the House official stressed,

(I do not understand why the families are being made to quarrel. These baseless implications are frightening.)

SMNI's franchise has been suspended indefinitely by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) due to alleged serious franchise violations.

A measure had also been filed for the revocation of the controversial network's franchise, but Rep. Nograles clarified that she had no part in it.

"Let’s set facts straight here para walang misinformation (to avoid misinformation): I did not file for the revocation of the franchise but merely the resolution to urge NTC to suspend operations habang tinitingnan itong mga violations sa franchise nila and other laws (while the violations of the franchise and other laws are being looked at).

Regarding the relationship between Quiboloy and the Dutertes, Rep. Nograles had this to say: "Spiritual adviser and being close is different from being part of the membership and the operations of SMNI nor does it have anything to do with violations. Is he implying they have somehing to do with the violations?"
