UAAP men's volleyball: UST snaps NU's 34-game winning streak

The last season’s finalists opened their campaign against each other, only this time the Golden Spikers cruised to the top and exacted their sweet revenge in a dramatic straight-set victory. 

Ybañez carried out 13 points on 12 kills and a service ace coupled with 17 excellent digs and five receptions for an all-over-the-court act to take down NU just like what he promised to do. 

“Isa na rin ‘yun sa motivation namin last year na matalo ‘yung NU sa first game pa lang. I think it’s a good start for the team na manalo against the defending champion. Siguro makakatulong ‘yun para tumaas ‘yung morale and kumpiyansa namin sa sarili,” said Ybañez.

The Bulldogs went undefeated all the way to their championship series against the Golden Spikers last year for their three-peat title. 

NU’s winning streak of 34 games dated all the way back to Season 81 before the men’s volleyball’s three-year hiatus. 

“I’m happy that the team responded to our preparation, they responded well. So masaya,” said UST head coach Odjie Mamon. 

GBoy De Vega delivered six points including the clincher through a service ace that stopped NU’s sensational run while also helping out on the other end with 16 excellent receptions. 

Angelo Almendras and Jade Disquitado paced NU with 15 and 13 points, respectively, as the Bulldogs came out on the losing side for the first time in five years.
