FEU turned back a feisty University of the Philippines side, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18, in the women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Petallo carried the fight with 16 points on 12 kills and four blocks, while Ubaldo tallied 14 excellent sets on top of seven points off five attacks and two service aces.
Chenie Tagaod, for her part, delivered 12 markers all off attacks made.
While the first two sets were closely-contested, FEU pulled away early into the third and widened the gap with a telling 22-14 advantage off Ubaldo’s service ace that left UP’s floor defense scrambling.
Although the Fighting Maroons displayed a determined last-minute fightback, the State U was hounded by unforced errors that ultimately ended the match in favor of FEU.
Season 85 Second Best Blocker Niña Ytang unloaded 13 points to pace the Fighting Maroons while the rest of her teammates were held to a single-digit production.
Both squads missed out on the Final Four last season, but saw FEU contended for a spot at some point in the elimination round before eventually finishing fifth in the standings.
The same thing can’t be said for UP, which struggled all through the season that ended in a one-win campaign.
Under new head coaches Manolo Refugia and Oliver Almadro at the touchline for FEU and UP, respectively, both squads are seeking for a significant turnaround this season.
“Same feeling nung naglalaro ako, exciting. Pero mas iba na ngayon kasi nasa sidelines na ako, more intense na rin ‘yung game,” said player turned coach Refugia of his UAAP coaching debut.
