Congressmen from all over the Visayas went to Siquijor on Sunday, Feb. 18 in a "show of support and solidarity" for Speaker Martin Romualdez, who along with the House of Representatives has been taking shots from the Senate over the Charter change (Cha-cha) issue.
Incidentally, Siquijor served as the site of the 12th installment of the largest and grandest service caravan under the natiowide Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair (BPSF).
Romualdez, leader of the House of Representatives and one of the primary proponents of BPSF, says he is delighted that the program has been successful in delivering government services to the people, even those living in far-flung areas.
Romualdez represented President Marcos at the opening of the two-day BPSF at the Siquijor State College Gymnasium in the municipality of Larena on Sunday, where he delivered the keynote address.
Making the trip to personally support the Speaker and the BPSF were Reps. Jocelyn Sy Limkaichong (Negros Oriental, 1st district), Chiquiting Sagarbarria (Negros Oriental, 2nd district), Rachel Marguerite Del Mar, (Cebu, 1st district), Eduardo Rama Jr. (Cebu 2nd district) Edsel Galeos, (Cebu, 2nd district), Pablo John Garcia (Cebu, 3rd district), Janice Salimbangon (Cebu, 4th district), Daphne Lagon (Cebu, 6th district), Peter Calderom (Cebu, 7th district) Emmarie "Lolypop" Ouano-Dizon (Mandaue City), Ma. Cynthia Khan (Lapu-Lapu City), and Ako Bisaya Partylist Rep. Sonny "SL" Lagon.
Romualdez is himself a visayan, and is representing Leyte's 1st district in the current 19th Congress.
The 300-member House has been pursuing the lifting of the restrictive economic provisions of the 1987 Constitution. The 24-member Senate, on the other hand, seem more concerned with the checks and balances of the process, to the point of inaction.
President Marcos has endorsed in no uncertain terms this economic Cha-cha in a speech in Makati earlier this month. Like the House members, Marcos highlighted the need for the Philippines to attract more foreign direct investments (FDIs).

A total of P300 million worth of programs and services are earmarked for delivery to the residents of Siquijor for the duration of the two-day BPSF. Some P117 million of the amount is in the form of cash aid.
The BPSF in Siquijor was the first one held in all of Region VII and was hosted by its representative, Rep. Zaldy Villa together with Siquijor Governor Jake Vincent Villa.
“Sa Bagong Pilipinas, lahat kasama sa pag-unlad. Pinakamaliit man ang Siquijor sa mga lalawigan ng Central Visayas, kasama pa din po kayo sa Bagong Pilipinas. Patunay dito ang paglunsad ngayon ng Serbisyo Fair sa inyong lugar,” Romualdez said.
(Under Bagong Pilipinas, we move together toward progress. Siquijor may be the smallest province in Central Visayas, but you're still part of Bagong Pilipinas. Today's Serbisyo Fair launch is proof of this.)
