Senator Grace Poe says the winning bidder for the operations and maintenance of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) is set to face a "herculean task".
Poe, who chairs the Senate Committee on Public Services, welcomed on Friday, Feb. 16 the Department of Transportation's (DOTr) announcement of the chosen private sector partner that will rehabilitate NAIA, and at the same time wished the consortium the best of luck.
"The winning bidder faces a herculean task of giving the decades-old structure the crucial expansion and modernization so it could graduate from the list of the world's infamous airports," she said.
"We trust that the DOTr will continue to ensure efficiency and transparency every step of the way in this monumental development project," she added.
The senator said that the success of this rehabilitation will not only give the Filipinos safety and convenience but pride in welcoming foreigners with a world-class gateway.
"Matagal nang hinihintay ng ating mga kababayan ang isang maayos at maipagmamalaking airport. Sana ay 'wag natin silang biguin (Our citizens have long been waiting for a better airport that they can be proud of. Let's not disappoint them)," she said.
DOTr had announced that the San Miguel Corporation (SMC)-led SMC-SAP Company and Consortium won the months-long bidding race.
The group proposed the highest bid amount among the three bidders for the airport, and offered to give the national government 82.16 percent of airport revenues.
