Guard your heart, data: NPC shares tips for safe online dating
By Sonny Daanoy
In celebration of Valentine's Day, the National Privacy Commission (NPC), an attached agency of the Department of Information and Communications (DICT), issued three helpful tips for navigating online dating apps.

"Whatever the status of your heart this love month (whether heartbroken or satisfied with love), it should also be protected against ghosters and hackers," NPC wrote on social media on Wednesday, Feb. 14, in a mix of English and Filipino.
"Lock down those settings," "be picky with apps," and "spill the tea, but not all of it" are some of the advice given.
Dishing out deets? Keep it low-key!
First advice was to "spill the tea, but not all of it."
NPC urged the public to share information gradually and be cautious about revealing sensitive information.

It underscored that the public should "avoid disclosing your home address, financial information, or other personal information too soon."

Moreover, the NPC has advised to "lock down those settings."
It pointed out that "online dating platforms often provide privacy settings that allow users to control who can see their profile and access certain information."

The commission explained that the public should adjust preferences according to what feels right for the users and where they currently stand in their connection with potential matches.
Opt dating platforms that prioritize user's privacy
Furthermore, it emphasized that the public should "be choosy with apps."
"Research the platform's privacy policies, terms of service, and security features," NPC said.

"Reputable sites often invest in robust security measures reducing the risk of your personal information falling into the wrong hands," it added.
DICT joins hype
Meanwhile, the DICT shared some witty social media posts to greet the public on Valentine's Day, while also spreading awareness about possible cybercrimes related to the occasion.
"Ang I love you ko sa'yo, hindi scam (My I love you for you is not a scam)," DICT said.
"Feeling mo outdated na yung connection niyong ex mo? huwag na mag-reconnect, baka masayang lang ang data (Feeling like the connection with your ex (boyfriend or girlfriend) is outdated? Don't reconnect, your data might just go to waste)," it said.
