34 injured after 2nd floor of Bulacan church collapses in the middle of Ash Wednesday mass

At least 34 people were injured when the second floor of the St. Peter Church in City of San Jose Del Monte collapsed in the middle of the Holy Mass for Ash Wednesday on Wednesday morning, Feb. 14.

Fortunately, all the injured victims only sustained bruises and minor injuries, according to Gina Ayson, chief of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) of San Jose Del Monte.

“There are no reported deaths or critically injured. All of the injured were already taken to the nearest hospital. They suffered minor bruises and there were also those complaining of shoulder pains,” said Ayson in an interview over dzBB.

“The church was already closed on the instruction of our City Mayor until such time that our City Engineering Office and Office of City Buildings complete their assessment,” she added.

Ayson said the incident happened at around 7:30 a.m. during a celebration of mass for the Ash Wednesday at the St. Peter Church located in Barangay Tungkong Mangga. 

She said the church was full and the second floor of the church collapsed due to a large number of churchgoers that occupied the area.

Ayson said the second floor of the church was made of wood and this was seen as the reason why the incident happened.

“The church was already subjected to renovation before but as to the interior and the mezzanine area, they still maintain the old structure,” said Ayson.
