Sweet Savings: Cake ingredient prices drop during Valentine's season
Are you eyeing some sweet product, perhaps a cake, for your loved one this Valentine’s day? Worry less as popular baked-accompanied sugar and eggs are reported to decline their prices.
Based on the data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, the average retail price of sugar shrunk to P78.10 per kilogram in the last phase of January from P79.11 per kilogram recorded during the first phase.
As for its inflation, or the increase in its prices for a specific period of time, it contracted to -1.0 percent in January 2024 from 0.1 percent in the same period last year.
The inflation rate of eggs and other dairy products also declined to 5.6 percent from 7.4 percent in December last year.
The price of eggs of medium and small sizes decreased to P6 and P4 to P5, respectively, according to the Philippine Egg Board Association (PEBA).
This was felt by Chrisha’s Kitchen, an online bakery shop, noting that their their egg supplier have reduced its prices as compared to the last two months.
Even the prices for the ingredients of their best-seller Valentine chocolate cake did not increase, the bakery said, except the increase in egg prices during the holiday season.
“The egg prices do increase talaga tuwing pasko, so its just back to usual price now,” they said.
Other ingredients such as butter and flour did not see significant increases but noted that fruit toppings like strawberry increased to P100 per kilogram.
Since their baked goods don’t use sugar, the shop did not have to bother with its additional costs but the only downfall is some of their ingredients are imported.
“Sometimes we get an advise that the import was on hold and sometimes they can only restock after 6 months, so we do need to have a huge storage space to store 6 months worth of ingredients,”
Chrisha’s Kitchen sell cakes within the price ranges of P595 brazo de mercedes roll and can go as high as P2460 for a 10 inch, four layered macadamia sans rival.
