Dangwa flower prices soar; florists design unique bouquets

Florists in Dangwa market took advantage of the demand for floral arrangements for Valentine's Day by coming up with unique designs and selling them at skyrocketing prices.
From the usual P500 to P700, the price of bouquets with a dozen roses now ranges from P1,500 to P4,000 depending on the size, design, and color of the roses.
Small potted flowers, which were usually priced at P200 to P500, are now selling at P800 – P1,500.
Imported flowers like Ecuadorian roses are being sold for P300 per piece, while one sunflower sells for P500.
Meanwhile, the prices of customized arrangements vary depending on the size and the amount of flowers.
According to the vendors, the prices have gone up starting last week of January and have doubled on Valentine's week.
They said the prices are expected to increase even more on Feb. 14.
Unique bouquets
Netizens marveled at the bouquets that are uniquely designed and which have gone viral on social media as Valentine's Day nears.
A flower bouquet made of satin fabric is popular with customers.
Janella Tonel, who has been selling satin flowers for seven months, said it is cheaper to buy and arrange raw materials than fresh flowers.
"Ang laki po ng agwat.. Makakabili po kayo ng single stem ng satin flower for less than P100. For fresh flower, ang single stem sa normal days ay around P300 po tapos P400 to P500 pag Valentine's (The difference is big... You can buy a single stem of a satin flower for less than P100. For fresh flowers, a single stem on normal days is around P300 then P400 to P500 during Valentine's)," she said.

Onthego, a home-based florist, sells vegetable bouquets for P650.
She and her husband thought of turning the vegetables into a bouquet because it is more practical than expensive flower bouquets that will be thrown into the trash after they have withered.
"Praktikal lang Ma'am, yan gulay din po kasi yong pangunahing kailangan ng mga nanay na katulad ko sa lutuin (It's just practical Ma'am, vegetable for mothers like me is really necessary for their cooking)," Onthego said.
Another seller of vegetable bouquets said that she asks her customers what they want to cook so that she can customize the vegetables she puts in the bouquet.
"Ano ba gusto mong lutuin? Chopsuey? Sinigang? Para yung gulay na kailangan nila kompletuhin ko na (What do you want to cook? Chopseuy? Sinigang? So I can provide them the the vegetables they need)," she said.
There is also a bouquet of money, teddy bears, and sanitary napkins for women.
They said the arrangement depends on what the customer wants to put in the bouquet.
There are also bouquets made of coffee sachets and canned goods, the prices of which depend on the proportions and brands of the products used.
Several florists were also seen selling empty bouquets for customers to put what they want to give to their loved ones.
