A wreath-laying ceremony was held at Freedom Park on Sunday, February 11.

“My friends, Evelio B. Javier was an ordinary man, just like most of us. But he did extraordinary things,” said Antique Provincial Board Member Dante Beriong.

Gov. Rhodora “Dodod” Cadiao and Vice Gov. Edgar Denosta were not present in the occasion.

The assassination of Javier was one of the major incidents that triggered the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution that ousted the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr.

Javier, a political ally of the late President Corazon C. Aquino, was shot and killed by gunmen during the canvassing of votes for the snap presidential elections in 1986.

His death anniversary is a non-working holiday in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo as well as the city of Iloilo since 1993 under Republic Act No. 7601.
