Suarez tells senators: Work faster, PBBM wants Cha-cha

House Deputy Speaker Quezon 2nd district Rep. David "Jay-jay" Suarez is asking senators to stop wasting time and step on the gas as far as passing their Charter change (Cha-cha) measure is concerned. 

"Ang aking pakiusap sa ating kasamahan na senador: Bilis-bilisan naman po natin ang ating trabaho. Sayang na sayang po ang oras at naiiwan na po ang Pilipinas," Suarez said in a video message sent to House of Representatives reporters on Friday, Feb. 9. 

(My appeal to our senator-colleagues is this: Speed up the pace of your work. This is a waste of time and the Philippines is being left behind.) 

"Huwag na po tayo mag-aksaya ng oras. Isipin po natin ang kapakanan ng bawat Pilipino," he added. 

(Let's stop wasting time. Let's think about the welfare of every Filipino.) 

A day earlier, President Marcos attended the Philippine Constitution Association's (Philconsa) Constitution Day, wherein he practically endorsed moves to relax the restrictive economic provisions of the existing Charter. 

Marcos also mentioned the high stakes behind it: "In any event, this administration is going to push hard to attract more foreign investments to significantly help us achieve our ambition of upper middle-class status by 2025." 

"Matagal napo namin tong pinaglalaban sa Kongreso sa pamamagitan ng amin pong Speaker Martin Romualdez," Suarez said.

Pending in the Senate is Resolution of Both Houses (RBH) No,6, which seeks to create a Constituent Assembly (Con-Ass) in order to revise the antiquated economic provisions in the 1987 Constitution. 

From an earlier promised March passage, the timeline for the bill has apparently been moved by the senators to October. This effectively kill the Cha-cha effort, according to proponents. 

Suarez hopes Marcos' remarks will knock some sense into the senators, who are traditionally anti-Cha-cha. 

"Nagpapasalamat po kami sa aming Pangulong Bongbong Marcos sa kanyang pahayag po kahapon (Thursday) na kinakailangan napo nating buksan ang ating ekonomiya sa pamamagitan ng pag-amyenda ng ating Saligang Batas upang sa ganun, mas maraming foreign direct investments po ang pumasok sa ating bansa para makapaglikha ng maayos at dekalidad na trabaho sa bawat Pilipino," said the Quezon congressman. 

(We thank our President Bongbong Marcos for his statement yesterday that we need to open up our economy by amending our Constitution, so that we can attract more foreign direct investments in our country that will create more quality jobs for Filipinos.) 

The event held at Shangrila Hotel in Makati City. It was co-organized by the Manila Overseas Press Club. 

Romualdez is Philconsa president.
