Over 1,000 sacks of trash were collected during the “Kalinisan" clean-up drive conducted by Malabon City local government and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in Dampalit Mega Dike on Saturday, Feb. 10.

Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval together with DILG Secretary Lawyer Benjamin Abalos Jr. led the Kalinisan (Kalinga at Inisyatiba para sa Malinis na Bayan) Clean-Up Drive.
Aligned with DILG Memorandum Circular No. 001-2024, the program aims to enhance public awareness and engagement in environmental responsibilities through effective waste management practices. It also encourages LGUs to invest in relevant programs and projects while establishing a recognition system for the cleanest LGUs.

Abalos emphasized the importance of discipline in waste disposal as he expressed hope that the Philippines would reach a point where everyone collaborates for a cleaner environment.
“Emphasized ko lang sa Bagong Pilipinas sa ating Pangulo at 'yung programa niya na kung saan isaugali na natin kung may basura tayo, plastic o pagkain man ng kendi, lagay mo na lang muna sa bulsa mo wag mo itapon kung saan saan, may tamang tapunan ng basura (I would like to emphasize in the context of the "Bagong Pilipinas" under our President's leadership and his program that we should make it a habit that if we have trash, whether plastic or candy wrappers, we should temporarily keep it in our pockets instead of littering it anywhere. There are proper garbage bins where we can dispose of our waste,” Abalos said.
“Sana we will reach that point na magkaroon tayo ng disiplina na 'wag na mag tapon kung saan saan, 'yun 'yung konsepto ng Bagong Pilipinas na kung saan magtutulungan ang lahat (I hope that we will reach a point where we all have the discipline not to litter indiscriminately. That's the concept of the ‘Bagong Pilipinas,’ where everyone collaborates and works together),” he added.
Mayor Sandoval expressed gratitude to all participants in the clean-up drive along the mega dike, highlighting the significance of unity in improving the environment.

“As your city mayor, I am truly delighted to see all of you united for the orderliness and cleanliness of our town,” she said.
“Nais kong ipapahayag sa inyo ang kahalagahan ng ating pagkakaisa sa pagsasaayos ng ating kapaligiran. Katulad ng ipinahayag ng ating mahal na Pangulo noong inilunsad niya ang "Bagong Pilipinas" sa kick-off rally, nasa ating mga kamay ang kapangyarihan na baguhin ang takbo ng ating lipunan (I want to emphasize to you the importance of our unity in the effort to improve our environment. As our beloved President expressed during the launch of the "Bagong Pilipinas" at the kick-off rally, the power to change the course of our society is in our hands),” she added.

She reiterated President Marcos Jr.'s call on barangays to make orderliness and cleanliness continuous efforts and transform vacant lands into gardens and vegetable plots.
“Ito ang hamon na nais kong iparating sa ating mga barangay. Hindi lamang natin responsibilidad ang paglilinis, kundi ang pag-aalaga rin ng kalikasan. Gawin natin itong bahagi ng ating pang-araw-araw na buhay (This is the challenge that I want to convey to our barangays. Taking care of the environment is not only our responsibility but also an integral part of our daily lives. Let's make it a part of our everyday routine),” Sandoval added.
“Through our unity, we can not only achieve the cleanliness of our town but also serve as a beacon of light for other communities,” she said.
The clean-up drive was participated in by around 1,500 volunteers, including members of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Malabon City Police Station (MCPS), City Hall employees, and City of Malabon University (CMU) students, the city's Public Information Office said.
According to the PIO, 1,124 sacks of trash were collected in the area.
