Mylene Paat showed the way with 11 points on eight hits and three blocks as the Crossovers achieved a podium finish in their first foray with new acquisitions led by seasoned players Aby Maraño and Ara Galang.
Team captain Maraño and Galang, former pillars of the disbanded F2 Logistics, chipped in 10 points apiece to backstop Paat in Chery Tiggo’s easy win after bowing to Petro Gazz in straight sets in the semifinals.
Eya Laure and Pauline Gaston were also instrumental with six points apiece for the Crossovers, who finished second behind Cignal in the elimination round before a Final Four exit.
“Maganda ‘yung experience kasama sila Ara at Tyang (Aby). It’s a great start para sa amin,” said coach Kungfu Reyes.
Coming off a 21-25, 19-25, 14-25 defeat at the hands of finalist Petro Gazz, Chery Tiggo wasn’t to be denied a shot at the podium by clinching the win in only 75 minutes.
The Crossovers took a hard-fought opening set, 25-20, and ran roughshod from there on with identical 12-point victories for the win at the expense of the exhausted Lady Blazers after their extended duel against the HD Spikers in the other semis pairing.
No player finished in double digits for St. Benilde in a commendable campaign despite being the only collegiate squad in the PNVF’s first event backed by PLDT, Ayala Land, Nuvali, Cignal, One Sports, One Sports+, Mikasa, Senoh, Foton, the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission.
Gayle Pascual, after an 18-point output in a tough 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 22-25, 10-15 loss to Cignal, had seven points to lead the charges of coach Jerry Yee, who gave all of their four professional counterparts a run for their own money in all slim defeats.
Cignal and Petro Gazz were still playing as of press time for the coveted title of the Champions League as the first offering this year of the PNVF, headed by president Ramon “Tats” Suzara.
Meanwhile, the men’s division featuring eight teams split into two groups unwraps today with Cignal going up against St. Benilde, Savouge Spin Doctors tussling against the Philippine Navy and VSN Asereht clashing against Iloilo.
