This year, the automotive journalism industry lost a key pillar when veteran journalist, Ray Butch Gamboa, passed away. Many might know him as the host, along with the late Pocholo Ramirez, of Motoring Today, which first aired in 1987. His following television show, Auto Focus, continued the tradition.
Gamboa was the first to truly specialize in automotive journalism and paved the way for many to follow. Besides setting a desirable example to follow, Gamboa also actively mentored many young entrants in the field, myself included, on the proper conduct expected of us and value of personal relationships in such a field.
Gamboa also actively fostered closer communications between brands and consumers, with activities like People’s Choice Awards and Test Drive Festivals that served as the barometer for the local auto industry trends and desires. Today, he is fondly remembered as the Godfather of motoring journalism for setting the standard that many will follow for decades to come.
