Police said the public utility vehicle was flagged down by four armed men wearing bonnets.
Driver Carl Bayer Villanueva, 36, opened the vehicle but was ordered by the suspects to alight, along with three passengers and conductor.
The suspects set the vehicle on fire after they disembarked using a gas lamp.
The Bureau of Fire Protection put out the fire and police conducted a dragnet operation to intercept the fleeing suspects.
The Gumaca Transport Service Cooperative, operator of the modern jeepney, said they have been receiving death threats from unidentified individuals. These individuals also threatened to burn their newly released modern jeepney units, it added.
The vehicle with a Gumaca-Catanauan route was on its way to the town proper when it was burned.
