Brewing success: Paper + Cup offers coffee and stories
In celebration of Manila Bulletin's 124th anniversary, we shine a spotlight on its cafe, Paper + Cup

During a Christmas village decoration activity at the Manila Bulletin (MB) office several years ago, a small corner in the lobby caught the attention of executives. Occupied by a pastry shop during the festive season, the shop left a lasting impression. When the decorations were taken down, an idea to transform the area into a permanent coffee haven was conceived. Thus, Paper + Cup café was established.
Jordan Tan, MB's business development manager, said that the name, coined on a whim during a discussion in 2016, reflects the initial connection to paper cups and the modern, inviting atmosphere the founders aimed to create.
As the cafe expanded, significant changes occurred during the pandemic. The introduction of mid-century modern furniture and strategic walls to separate the office space from the cafe marked a turning point.

The popularity of Paper + Cup skyrocketed after a TikTok video featuring its unique charm went viral, attracting customers from various walks of life, mostly students from nearby universities and foreigners exploring Intramuros.
The tables multiplied, and walls were adorned with artworks from MB's Sketchfest contest, transforming the central space into an art gallery, and the cafe now boasts a spacious 200 square meters with approximately 100 seats distributed across three distinct areas.
With the well positioned power outlets and an atmosphere conducive to focus or talk, that corner of the MB lobby has turned it into an ideal space for students, professionals, and tourists – who want to connect or take a break.
