ERC greenlights P20-billion Ilocos Norte transmission line

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved a P20.65-billion transmission line project proposed by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to strengthen the country's grid connection.

The Balaoan-Laoag 500-kilovolt (kV) transmission line will accommodate wind and solar power projects in Ilocos Norte, ensuring a more reliable energy supply for consumers.

This project is among 15 proposed by NGCP to improve energy access, as mandated by the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) of 2001.

It is considered a major grid development, along with other key projects like the Western Luzon 500 kV backbone Stage 2, the Tuy-Dasmarinas 500 kV line, and the Batangas-Mindoro Interconnection.

The ERC said its approval is conditional, subject to optimization based on actual use and verified expenses, which ensures cost-efficiency and adherence to the Rules in Setting the Transmission Wheeling Rates (RTWR).

Recenlty, the Cebu-Bohol Interconnection Project was energized to meet the region's growing power demand. This project utilizes submarine cables and overhead lines to connect Argao in Cebu to Maribojoc in Bohol.

NGCP has also outlined a P600-billion transmission development plan, spanning until 2050. This roadmap includes projects across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, aiming to create a sustainable and efficient power grid system.
