MPD temporarily closes Recto Avenue to prevent protesters from entering Mendiola

The Manila Police District (MPD) implemented temporary road closures along Recto Avenue to prevent protesters from entering Mendiola on Tuesday morning, Dec. 10.

Barricades were set up by the MPD along the major thoroughfare as part of their security measures. 

Police said the protest, expected to involve approximately 200 protesters, may take the Loyola Street to reach Mendiola.

Among the protesters were members of the Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA), who were marching to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 

The group emphasized that their demonstration was a peaceful rally aimed at highlighting the importance of human rights and raising awareness about ongoing human rights issues in the country.

Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes to avoid getting caught in traffic jams, particularly in areas near the Recto-Mendiola stretch.

Authorities urged the public to be patient as these measures are meant to ensure public safety.

The move, police said, was also rooted in concerns over the possibility of clashes between protesters and police forces, which occurred during demonstrations last November 30.

MPD personnel remain strategically positioned along potential entry points to Mendiola, with heightened vigilance on ensuring that the protest will end peacefully and does not escalate into violence.
