Mayor orders evacuation of residents living at foot of Kanlaon Volcano


BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas ordered residents living on the foot of Kanlaon Volcano in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental to evacuate from their homes following an explosive  eruption on Monday, Dec. 9.

In a video posted on the city government’s Salta Canlaon Facebook page, Cardenas urged residents in Barangays Malaiba, Lumapao, Pula, and Masulog to prepare for evacuation to ensure their safety.

Cardenas said that he has alerted all the government agencies and the involved committees to check necessary measures needed for their response.

He also said that there will be no classes starting on Tuesday, Dec. 10, to ensure the safety of the students and the teaching personnel.

Cardenas advised city hall employees to go home to their families to check on them and prepare for any eventuality.

He called on the private sector that the city to lend their vehicles to accommodate more evacuees as dump trucks have been positioned by the city government.

Cardenas noted that Alert Level 3 has been imposed on Kanlaon Volcano due to magmatic unrest and explosive eruption. He advised residents to wear face masks as the effects of the recent eruption are even greater than ashfall.

He assured that the city government is ready to respond to the situation.
