ILOILO CITY – Activists have called for the release of activist Tomas Dominado who was arrested in this city last week for being an alleged former New People’s Army (NPA) leader.

“We call for the immediate dropping of all charges and the unconditional release,” said the Panay Alliance Karapatan and Kapatid Panay on Sunday, Dec. 8.

The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) did not identify Dominado when he was arrested for rebellion and murder on Dec. 5. The ICPO only identified the 74-year-old Dominado as alias Pendong.
The ICPO and the 3rd Infantry Division of the Philippine Army said Dominado was tagged as a terrorist by the Anti-Terrorism Council last April 2021.
Also arrested was Jofel, a former NPA medic.
Panay Alliance and Kapatid Panay said that Dominado and Jofel are facing trumped-up charges from warrants issued more than a decade ago.
“We firmly assert that the charges against them are baseless, fabricated, and politically motivated, exemplifying the systematic misuse of judicial processes to silence activists,” they said.
“His continued detention endangers his life. He needs urgent medical intervention that cannot be adequately provided in detention facilities.”
They said that Dominado is ailing. He survived a stroke and now bedridden and uses a wheelchair.
Dominado is the husband of missing activist Maria Luisa Posa-Dominado who was abducted in Oton, Iloilo in 2007.
