BACOLOD CITY – A 36-year-old police officer was shot and wounded by suspected New People’s Army rebels outside his house in Barangay Inayawan, Cauayan, Negros Occidental on Friday, Dec. 6.
Police Lt. Col. Lowell Garinganao, Cauayan police chief, said the victim with a rank of corporal was about to ride his motorcycle to work when he was shot by at least five unidentified gunmen hiding nearby.
The victim sustained a bullet wound in the arm and sought refuge in a neighbor’s house.
He is now recuperating in a hospital.
Recovered from the crime scene were a dud bullet, an empty shell, and AK47 rifle slugs.
Police said there were individuals asking information about the victim prior to the attack.
Garinganao said the victim had no work-related threats but they are probing the incident as insurgency related as the area is partially rebel infested.
