Iglesia Ni Cristo 'gatherings' to echo PBBM stance as impeachment raps vs VP Sara pile up in House

Influential nontrinitarian Christian church Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) is organizing a rally in support of President Marcos' call for the House of Representatives to not pursue the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte.

On Thursday, Dec. 5, Net25's "Sa Ganang Mamamayan" program host Gen Subardiaga said that an impeachment complaint against the country's second highest official wasn't a priority as there are more important issues that need to be addressed.

“Ang Iglesia ni Cristo ay para sa kapayapaan. Ayaw po natin sa anumang uri ng kaguluhan na manggagaling sa kaninumang panig," Subardiaga said.

(The Iglesia ni Cristo is for peace. We do not any conflict arising from any side.)

"Ngayon pa lamang mga kababayan ay nag organisa na po ang mga lokal sa buong Iglesia para magkaroon ng mga malalaking pagtitipon. Para ipakita, ipahayag itong binabanggit namin na pabor kami sa opinion ng Pangulong Bongbong Marcos na no to impeachment,” the program host added.

Television network Net25 is run by the INC.

President Marcos--in a leaked message to House members--earlier said he does not support calls for the impeachment of the Vice President. He said such move would not help the Filipino people.

Just days prior, Vice President Duterte issued death threats against President Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez. Her shocking remarks were part of the very public falling out between the two former "UniTeam" partners.

Despite the Chief Executive's appeal, two separate impeachment complaints have been filed before the House of Representatives against Duterte this week.

The first complaint, filed on Monday, Dec. 2 by civil society groupsfigureheads led by former senator Leila de Lima, cited culpable violation of the constitution, graft and corruption, bribery, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes as grounds for Duterte’s impeachment

The second impeachment complaint, filed on Wednesday, Dec. 4 by progressive groups, cited allegations of betrayal of public trust on the part of the second highest-ranked official of the land.

It remains to be seen how the lower chamber will act on these complaints, if at all.
