Going back to the movies

As the new year approaches, it’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the moments in entertainment that brought us joy and pride in our local talents.

From outstanding performances to captivating shows, we’ve witnessed countless instances that made us cheer for our community’s creativity and hard work.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate those unforgettable experiences and the Filipino artists who made them possible in 2024.

1) The record-breaking “Hello, Love, Again” movie led by Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards has earned ₱1.06 billion as of Nov. 23, becoming the first Filipino film to surpass the ₱1 billion mark worldwide box office.

This latest milestone follows the film’s series of box office achievements, earning the biggest first-day ticket sales of ₱85 million last Nov. 13, achieving the highest single-day gross of ₱131 million last Nov. 16, breaking into the US Top 10 box office at no. 8, and becoming the highest-grossing Filipino movie of all time as of Nov. 22.

Apart from its box office feats, the movie, directed by Cathy Garcia-Sampana and produced by ABS-CBN’s Star Cinema and GMA Pictures, also served as the closing film at the recent Asian World Film Festival held in Los Angeles, California.

2) For the first time in 13 years, a Filipino-American singer made it to the Top 5 of the popular reality singing competition “The Voice USA.”

On Monday night in the US, Sofronio Vasquez impressed the coaches and viewers with his performance during the live show of the competition.

He sang “If I Can Dream” by Elvis Presley and did a duet of The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” with Jeremy Beloate, featuring Sting himself on guitar.

Before appearing on “The Voice USA,” Vasquez gained fame as a semifinal contender on “Tawag Ng Tanghalan” which was part of “It’s Showtime.”

Don’t forget to vote for Sofronio (for fans in the US only) during “The Voice USA” finale next week.

3) P-pop’s BINI has undeniably become the nation’s prominent girl group. After participating in ABS-CBN’s Star Hunt Academy, the group debuted on June 11, 2021.

Despite the challenges, these remarkable women flourished into what is now celebrated as the Nation’s Girl Group, winning the hearts of Filipinos and fans worldwide with their talent and charm.
BINI has staged sold-out shows this year, including the three-day “Grand BINIverse” concert at the Araneta Coliseum last Nov. 16-18.

It follows the group’s newest milestone as the “Best Asia Act” winner in the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA).

Before this, BINI was recognized by the official website of the Recording Academy in the US, popularly known as the Grammys, as one of the 12 rising groups in the world.

In the article entitled “12 Rising Girl Groups To Know Now: FLO, KISS OF LIFE, BINI, Citizen Queen & More,” uploaded on the site on Oct. 3, it said that the presence of BINI and the other girl groups are expected to push the needle of girl group culture.

“Amid K-pop’s global domination, Filipino pop — commonly known as Pinoy pop, or simply “P-pop” — is becoming one of the fastest-growing music markets. Leading the revolution are the eight women of BINI: Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoannna, and Sheena.

First seen in ABS-CBN’s 2019 training program “Star Hunt Academy,” BINI has captured Southeast Asia with EDM-driven pop production and a blend of English and Tagalog lyrics. And as the first Filipino act to enter Spotify’s Top Artist Global Chart and to perform at the long-standing KCON festival, it’s no surprise they've been dubbed the “Nation’s Girl Group,” the article read.
4) Filipino-American singer Olivia Rodrigo staged her largest concert yet at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan on Oct. 5. On Instagram, the Grammy-winning artist said she had been dreaming of the Philippine concert for a while.

“Been dreaming of this show for a while. My first time in the Philippines and also my biggest venue ever!!!!! Thank you to everyone Manila, for welcoming me so generously and making me feel so loved,” read part of Olivia’s post on social media.

With concert tickets priced at ₱1,500 each, the net ticket sales went to the non-profit organization Jhpiego, which aims to provide healthcare to women and girls in the Philippines.
Here’s a toast to Filipino talents everywhere. Mabuhay!
