The crash involved a wing van truck, a bus, five other vehicles, and 16 motorcycles.
Members of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) identified the suspect as Richard Mangupag, the truck driver, who initially fled the scene but was arrested during a follow-up operation at around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6.
Investigations showed that the accident occurred when the fully loaded truck Mangupag was driving suffered brake failure and rammed into multiple vehicles.
The Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction Office (QCDRRMO), along with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Philippine Red Cross (PRC) emergency responders unit, immediately responded to assist the victims.
The 26 victims were rushed to different hospitals for medical treatment.
The multiple collision stalled traffic in the area, prompting the temporary closure of the northbound lane of the Katipunan flyover.
Mangupag is set to face charges for multiple counts of damage to property, physical injuries, and homicide.
Authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant, ensure vehicle maintenance, and prioritize safety, especially in high-traffic areas.
