The 3rd Infantry Division said the 12th IB was responding to information from the people about the presence of communist fighters in the area when the encounter erupted.
Troops engaged around 10 NPA rebels believed to be remnants of the Regional Sentro de Gravidad (RSDG) and dismantled Central Front Committee of the NPA in Panay Island for about 30 minutes.
The guerillas withdrew and left their dead comrade behind. Recovered from the encounter site were one rifle and five backpacks.
Major Gen. Marion Sison, 3rd ID commander, lauded the 12th IB’s achievement.
“Your actions reflect the highest standards of service and integrity, reinforcing our steadfast resolve to bring lasting peace to our communities,” said Sison in a statement on Monday, Dec. 30.
