Fast-rising chess player Nika Juris Nicolas went undefeated in all her matches to emerge as champion in the 35th International Chess Festival at the Galaxy Hotel in Krakow, Poland over the weekend.

Nicolas, a Grade 7 student at Victory Christian International School in Pasig City, topped the Open Under 1800 category with six wins and one draw to finish with 6.5 points for the trophy.

It further boosted her FIDE rating by 86 points.

Her victories came at the expense of local bets Kacper Miąso and Mateusz Waszkiewicz, and Ukraine’s Artem Sokolvak in the first three rounds, before settling for a fourth-round draw against another Polish rival in Filip Korda.

She then dominated Poland’s Arkadiusz Piwowarczyk, Nikita Alexeev of Ukraine and Ali Asgarzada of Azerbaijan in the following rounds.

Local bets Rafal Skalny and Korda wound up second and third places with identical 5.5 points.
