A few days ahead of the New Year’s celebration, there have been 15 cases of indiscriminate firing across the country, the Philippine National Police (PNP) disclosed on Monday, Dec. 30.

The PNP said six cases were recorded in Calabarzon (Region 4A), four in National Capital Region (NCR), two in Central Visayas (Region 7), and one each in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9), and Davao (Region 11) as of 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29.

Five persons were hurt in the said incidents, including one who was hit by a stray bullet.

Ten suspects were arrested by the PNP related to these cases: seven are civilians, a police officer, a security guard, and an alleged personnel of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor); while nine firearms were confiscated from them.

PNP Chief, Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil earlier directed all police units nationwide to prioritize public safety and security as the country celebrates the New Year.

The national police chief also underscored the police force’s readiness to respond to emergencies, including providing assistance to victims of firecracker-related injuries and responding to fire incidents in collaboration with local fire protection units.

A total of 37,000 police officers were mobilized nationwide to ensure safe festivities and smooth travel for holiday returnees.

“We have mobilized our police units to maintain peace and order during New Year celebrations and ensure the safety of travelers heading home. Coordination with government agencies and local traffic management offices is key to managing the movement of people and vehicles effectively during this busy season,” Marbil stated.
