BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Javi Benitez cancelled the New Year’s celebration in Victorias City, Negros Occidental to focus on community service and reinforcing drainage systems following last week's flood.

In a statement, Benitez said that heavy rains since Dec. 22 flooded various parts of the city, including Barangay 21, where eight families were evacuated and provided assistance.
He noted that this is the most severe flooding the city has experienced despite ongoing improvements to its drainage system that began in 2022.
The city widened, cleared, and desilted key waterways such as the Malihaw and Magnanud Rivers and the Guinpanaan and Maagmang Creeks.
However, the city’s natural position as a catch basin, along with the prolonged heavy rainfall and high tides, has led to significant flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
Benitez said that the current harvest season has impacted drainage as crops that would typically absorb floodwaters are now being harvested, leading to a higher volume of runoff.
He revealed plans to mobilize volunteers and stakeholders to clear drainage channels, track floodwater movement, and identify potential water egress points.
On Jan. 6, 2025, city officials, with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, will meet to discuss short-term and long-term solutions to address the flooding.
“We will continue to support the affected families and ensure that they receive the assistance they need during this time,” Benitez said.
