Filipinos dominating Fashion Week
This year marks the rise of Filipino style icons on the international fashion week stage. According to Vogue Business, Filipino celebrities shone brightly during Paris spring-summer 2025 season, raising the Philippines’ position on the radar of luxury brands. Leading the pack is Heart Evangelista, with $10.6 million in media impact value (MIV), taking the top spot in Launchmetrics’ report. Securing the third spot is Pia Wurtzbach, with $7 million in MIV. One of the highlights of the former Miss Universe’s fashion week adventure was her walk in L’Oreal Paris's annual Le Défilé “Walk Your Worth” as the brand’s first official Filipino representative.
Method Dressing continues
Red carpet premieres turned into fashion extravaganzas this year, driven by Hollywood’s obsession with method dressing. Stars showcased their unique fashion takes on the roles, themes, and other elements tied to their movies. Zendaya mastered the art of method dressing with her bold choices for the Dune: Part Two press tour and her nod to sportswear-inspired red carpet looks for Challengers. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande also delivered major fashion moments as they promoted the film adaptation of the musical Wicked.
Charms obsession
2024 has been a standout year for accessories. In the first quarter, the streets were abuzz with young people wearing duck hair clips. Bag charms also became a vibrant form of self-expression, with many people getting creative in adorning their arm candies. The accessory that stole the show this year, however, was Labubu—a designer toy created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung in 2015—which many are using to style their bags.
‘The Garden of Time’
Met Gala 2024 embraced the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and invited attendees to interpret the dress code “The Garden of Time.” The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute last May was adorned with ensembles straight out of fairy tales, including Tyla’s Balmain sand dress, Gwendoline Christie in Maison Margiela, and Taylor Russell in a Loewe dress with a wooden bustier.
Drama in Couture
Paris Haute Couture Week spring-summer 2024 proved once again that fashion is art. For its couture line, Viktor & Rolf celebrated the beauty of imperfection, while London-based designer Robert Wun brought a chic horror story to the runway. Meanwhile, John Galliano left everyone breathless with his theatrical show for Maison Margiela.
Creative Director Musical Chairs
It is not unusual for designers to step down from their roles as heads of major fashion houses. However, 2024 saw an extraordinary number of high-profile departures, with Virginie Viard, Kim Jones, Hedi Slimane, and Matthieu Blazy leaving Chanel, Fendi, Celine, and Bottega Veneta, respectively. New leaders like Gucci’s Sabato De Sarno and Alessandro Michele debuted their initial collections for their brands. Ready-to-wear brands joined in on the excitement, appointing big-name designers as creative directors—such as Zac Posen for Gap and Clare Waight Keller for Uniqlo.
