PNP-IAS probes into Negros Occidental fatal shooting involving a cop

The Internal Affairs Service of the Philippine National Police (PNP-IAS) has started conducting investigation into a shooting incident in Pulupandan town of Negros Occidental where a police corporal allegedly gunned down a construction worker and another person.

PNP-IAS Inspector General Brigido Dulay said the investigation is part their mandate to  investigate all incidents involving the discharge of firearms by police personnel.

In the case of Police Corporal Armin Alanza, the offense was serious since it led to the death Joman Fuentes and the wounding of his father, 52-year old Jomarie Fuentes.

“We will not tolerate any abuse of authority or violations of duty, especially by those sworn to protect and serve the public. This incident is a solemn reminder of the importance of accountability and integrity within our ranks.” said Dulay.

Alanza, a member of the 604th Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB 6), is now under police custody and is facing criminal charges. The IAS probe is more on administrative cases, the maximum penalty is dismissal from the service.

Alanza allegedly drew his gun and fired at Fuentes and his father after a heated argument. The cop was also injured after he was hit by the the elder Fuentes.

Dulay said the Regional Internal Affairs Service 6 (RIAS 6), headed by Lt. Col. Joemarie Occeño, mobilized a probe team to ensure a comprehensive and impartial probe into the case. An ocular inspection has already been conducted, along with the collection of evidence and coordination with local authorities.

“Investigators have also questioned PCpl Alanza, who is currently under hospital confinement at Bacolod Doctors Hospital. The investigation aims to establish the full circumstances of the incident and ensure accountability for any violations of law or protocol,” said Dulay.

“The IAS assures the public of its unwavering commitment to pursuing justice. Any abuse of power or serious misconduct will be addressed with the full weight of the law, ensuring that the public trust in the PNP is upheld,” he added.
