Kanlaon ash emissions, volcanic quakes continue

Occasional ash emissions continued at Kanlaon Volcano, with two events recorded during the 24-hour period from 12 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, to 12 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 29, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

In its bulletin on Sunday, Phivolcs reported that the emissions, which lasted between 43 and 49 minutes, were accompanied by 16 volcanic earthquakes, including six volcanic tremors, lasting 49 to 84 minutes.

Phivolcs also noted“continuous degassing with occasional ash emission” and recorded sulfur dioxide emissions at 3,984 tons per day.

“Voluminous” plume of ash rose to 1,200 meters above the volcano’s summit.

As the volcano edifice remains inflated, Phivolcs warned nearby communities of the potential for sudden explosive eruptions, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, ballistic projectiles, rockfalls, and lahar flows during heavy rainfall.

Due to the ongoing magmatic unrest, Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3.
