While no low-pressure areas (LPAs) are currently being monitored, three weather systems—the shear line, Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and the northeast monsoon (amihan)—are expected to bring cloudy skies and light to moderate rainfall across parts of the Philippines in the next 24 hours.
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Weather Specialist Obet Badrina said on Sunday, Dec. 29 that rains may particularly affect parts of Central and Southern Luzon, Eastern Visayas, and Mindanao.
The shear line, which forms when cold winds from the amihan collide with warm winds from the easterlies, could bring cloudy skies, scattered rains, and isolated thunderstorms to Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Aurora, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes.
Meanwhile, the ITCZ, a weather system formed by the convergence of winds from the northern and southern hemispheres, may cause cloudy skies, scattered rains, and thunderstorms over the Visayas, Occidental Mindoro, Romblon, Palawan, the rest of the Bicol Region, Zamboanga del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur.
The amihan will also bring cloudy skies with occasional rains to Cagayan Valley and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
PAGASA warned of the potential flash floods or landslides in areas affected by the three weather systems, particularly during moderate to heavy rainfall.
Elsewhere in Luzon, the amihan is expected to have a minimal impact, bringing only partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains.
Meanwhile, the ITCZ will continue to bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over the rest of Mindanao.
