Mati City implements signal flag system at Dahican Beach

DAVAO CITY – The Mati City Tourism Office has established a signal flag system at Dahican Beach to ensure the safety of visitors and manage possible marine risks effectively.

Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat said in a statement on Friday, Dec. 27, that the initiative was prompted by a recent encounter with a blue jellyfish, prompting them to increase visitor safety measures.

According to the city government, someone reported being stung by a jellyfish earlier this week at Dahican Beach.

Though the person received prompt medical attention, Rabat said the incident underscored the importance of implementing safety measures on the well-visited coastline.

The City Tourism Office described the signal flag system as a visual guide for swimmers and surfers, indicating current beach conditions such as tides, currents, and potential marine life activity.

Resort owners, lifeguards, and other stakeholders were urged to implement the system and educate visitors about its significance.

“We are taking a proactive approach to ensure the safety of our tourists and residents,” Rabat said.

She added that through the signal flag system, the tourism office helps the city maintain Dahican’s reputation as a safe and enjoyable destination.

The city government reminded beachgoers to heed the warnings of lifeguards and observe the flag indicators, especially if there are jellyfish in the area.

Authorities advised the public to avoid direct contact with jellyfish and seek immediate medical attention if stung.

Dahican Beach, celebrated for its pristine waters and vibrant surf culture, continues to attract local and international visitors.

Rabat said the implementation of the signal flag system underscores the city’s commitment to ensuring a secure and memorable experience for the people.
