Toyota has officially announced the launch of a plug-in hybrid version of its popular Alphard luxury minivan, scheduled to arrive in Japanese showrooms on January 31, 2025. The Alphard, already a favorite in the Philippines' luxury MPV segment, is now taking a bigger step toward electrification, responding to the growing demand for environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles. The Alphard PHEV is positioned as a premium offering that seamlessly combines luxury, performance, and sustainability. With a claimed electric-only driving range of up to 73 kilometers, this model is ideal for short city trips or chauffeured services, operating quietly and without emissions. For longer journeys, a 2.5-liter gasoline engine takes over seamlessly, supported by Toyota’s E-Four all-wheel-drive system for enhanced stability.
Changing the luxury minivan game
The Alphard PHEV employs a two-motor setup, and its hybrid powertrain generates a combined output of 306-Ps. This advanced setup also offers impressive hybrid fuel efficiency of 16.7 kilometers per liter, making it an attractive option for those concerned about rising fuel costs and environmental impact.
A notable feature of the Alphard PHEV is its switch to lithium-ion batteries, in contrast to the HEV's nickel-metal hydride battery. This new, larger unit preserves interior space and lowers the center of gravity by 35 millimeters compared to the HEV, resulting in improved stability and ride quality. Additionally, Toyota has enhanced passenger comfort by incorporating extensive noise-dampening materials, ensuring a quieter cabin experience, even at higher speeds. For convenience, the Alphard PHEV supports both standard and rapid charging. A 50-kW rapid charger can replenish the battery to 80% capacity in just 38 minutes. The minivan is also equipped with a 1,500-watt external power supply, enabling Vehicle-to-Household (V2H) compatibility.
Luxury meets innovation
True to its premium reputation, the Alphard PHEV introduces several exclusive features that distinguish it from conventional counterparts. These include 19-inch silver sputtering-finished wheels, a woodgrain steering wheel, and an Ultrasuede headliner. The vehicle also comes with a Smooth Stop control system, which suppresses weight transfer to the front when decelerating, helping stabilize the occupant riding experience.
Passengers can also enjoy the option of a JBL premium sound system with 15 speakers and a 14-inch rear-seat entertainment system, ensuring a first-class travel experience. For the environmentally conscious luxury market, the Alphard's plug-in hybrid variant provides a compelling balance between cutting-edge technology and Toyota’s renowned reliability. The inclusion of bidirectional charging capabilities further enhances its practicality, allowing the vehicle to supply power back to homes or appliances in times of need.
Addressing a changing market
In the Philippines, where the Alphard has cultivated a loyal customer base, the introduction of the plug-in hybrid variant aligns perfectly with shifting consumer preferences. With rising fuel prices and an increased awareness of reducing carbon footprints, the market is progressively leaning toward greener vehicle options. Additionally, the country's expanding EV infrastructure allows PHEVs like the Alphard to benefit from the flexibility of charging at EV stations or refueling at traditional gas stations, offering the best of both worlds. Toyota’s decision to introduce a plug-in hybrid Alphard reflects the brand's multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality. By catering to diverse customer needs, Toyota is fostering broader adoption of electrified vehicles, particularly in markets like the Philippines, where practical and luxury considerations intersect.
Availability and pricing
Sales of the Alphard PHEV in Japan will begin in early 2025, and while there’s no official confirmation on when the plug-in hybrid version will arrive in the Philippines, it is expected to follow shortly given the region’s interest in premium, eco-friendly vehicles. Pricing for the Alphard PHEV in Japan starts at ¥10,650,000, approximately ₱4,100,250, reflecting its position as a top-tier offering in the lineup. With the current HEV variant priced at₱4,685,000, the PHEV version is anticipated to come with a potential price increase.
