SN Aboitiz Power taps GEDI for Magat energy storage project

SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP) has signed an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract with GEDI China Energy to expand the battery energy storage system (BESS) facility at the Magat hydroelectric power plant.

SNAP, a joint venture between Norway-based Scatec and Aboitiz Power, will develop Phase 2 of the 16-megawatt (MW) Magat BESS project with the help of China Energy Engineering Group’s subsidiary.

In a statement, SNAP announced that the second phase of construction would begin in the first half of next year, with commercial operations expected to commence by the first half of 2026.

This expansion follows Phase 1 of the 24 MW Magat BESS, which began operations last January.

Chuangang Guo, Deputy General Manager of GEDI, expressed gratitude for the recent contract signing with SNAP for Phase 2 of the Magat BESS project.

"In return for your trust, we will adhere to our philosophy of careful planning, scientific management, and efficient organization, along with our working style of pragmatism, diligence, and efficiency, to deliver the project with high-quality performance," he said.

Joseph Yu, SNAP President and Chief Executive Officer, added, "The Magat BESS expansion underscores SNAP Group’s mission to lead in the renewable energy space and accelerate the country's transition to a more sustainable energy future."

Currently, SNAP has a total attributable net sellable capacity of 201.55 MW, with four existing facilities across three provinces in the Philippines.
