PAGASA lifts Signal No. 1 as TD moves away

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) lifted Signal No. 1 on Monday, Dec. 23, as Tropical Depression Romina moved away from the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

PAGASA Weather Specialist Obet Badrina said the tropical depression is no longer expected to directly affect the Philippines. However, its trough or extension is still causing scattered rains and thunderstorms in Palawan.

As of 3 a.m., the center of the cyclone was located 165 kilometers west of Pag-asa Island, Kalayaan, Palawan.

Badrina added that there are no new low-pressure areas or storms inside or outside the PAR, and the country is expected to remain tropical cyclone-free through Christmas, Dec. 25.

However, the shear line, a weather system formed by the collision of cold winds from the northeast monsoon (amihan) and warm winds from the easterlies, may continue to bring scattered moderate to intense rains over the Visayas, Bicol Region, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, and Romblon in the next 24 hours.

Moderate to heavy rains due to the amihan may also affect Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Aurora, Bulacan, and Nueva Ecija.

Badrina warned that flash floods and landslides could occur in areas affected by the three weather systems.

Meanwhile, the amihan may have minimal impact on the rest of Luzon, where only partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains are expected.

The rest of Mindanao will experience generally fair weather with partly cloudy to cloudy skies, apart from isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
