PPA: NorthPort passenger terminal upgrades completed in time for Holiday exodus

The upgrades of the NorthPort passenger terminal complex have been completed in time for the influx of passengers during the Christmas and New Year travels, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) said.

PPA General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago said the project was the result of the collaboration of the agency and the Manila North Harbour Port, Inc. (MNHPI) to ensure a smoother and more efficient experience for travelers. 

Santiago said the first phase of upgrades has included significant renovations and additions, such as modernized restrooms and improved departure area for passengers and the installation of three new x-ray baggage inspection units to reduce wait times at security checks.

“This, along with the integration of passenger terminal fee collection with vessel ticket sales, ensures a seamless flow for passengers entering the terminal,” said Santiago.

“With the busy December travel period in full swing, these improvements offer enhanced passenger services and facilities that prioritize convenience, comfort, and safety,” he added.

Santiago explained that the improvements come in time for the Holiday rush and with the completion of the Phase 1, the focus is now on the Phase 2 of the project which include the modernization of the air-conditioning system, new gang chairs for passenger comfort, a renovation of the concourse area, expanded loading/unloading bays, installation of new charging stations, and improvements to the arrival area.

“We are thrilled to move forward with Phase 2, bringing even more advanced facilities to improve passenger comfort and experience. Our commitment to improving NorthPort continues as we work towards a fully modernized and seamless travel experience,” said Santiago. 

Phase 2 is scheduled to begin in January 2025 and Santiago said this is part of the PPA and the MNHPI’s commitment to continuously improve the port facilities to meet the growing demands of passengers.

“This is part of the efforts to ensure that the NorthPort remains a modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly gateway. The PPA and MNHPI reaffirm their dedication to enhancing the NorthPort Passenger Terminal and supporting national development with world-class port facilities,” said Santiago.
