Unilever Philippines boosts local manufacturing, exports to global markets

Unilever, the multinational fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) company, is strengthening its presence in the Philippines by enhancing its local manufacturing capabilities and supply chain strategies.

In a statement, Fredy Ong, Unilever chairman and chief executive officer, said the move is driven by the company's strong growth in the country, where its products are present in nine out of 10 homes.

Currently, over 90 percent of Unilever products sold in the country are produced in its factories in Pasig City, General Trias, Cavite, and a collaborative facility in Cabuyao, Laguna.

"Supply chain is the operational backbone of Unilever," said Ong. "We live in a world where consumers increasingly want faster, customized, and personalized products.

“With brands like Rexona, Sunsilk, Selecta, Breeze, and Knorr under our belts, we must always have a reliable stock of high-quality products and a supply chain that will deliver superior products and services at an excellent value,” he added.

Unilever's newest Beauty & Wellbeing and Personal Care (BWPC) factory, inaugurated in late 2023, has increased production capacity by 60 percent. The company's local manufacturing enabled it to export products to markets in the US, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Middle East.

To optimize its supply chain, Unilever is leveraging new technology and 4th industrial revolution tools. These upgrades have resulted in a 40 percent increase in efficiency and reduction in machinery at the BWPC factory.

Unilever is also committed to sustainability, which is reflected in its use of renewable energy sources and strategic facility locations to minimize its carbon footprint.

Unilever is also utilizing AI-driven insights to respond to market trends and automate tasks, increasing efficiency and promoting a balanced work culture. The company's integrated operations program connects suppliers, customers, and internal operations, optimizing the entire ecosystem.

The ASEAN region, and the Philippines in particular, is a key growth area for Unilever. By enhancing its local supply chain, Unilever aims to sustain its business growth in the country and solidify its position as a key driver of the company's global growth.
