The San Juan City government launched the "Barong Project" aimed at promoting sustainability, artistic development, and community development by upcycling the traditional Filipino attire into Christmas ornaments.
The project is being undertaken by the city government in partnership with renowned designer Zarah Juan, SM Supermalls, SPARK Philippines, Caring Keri Foundation, and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-San Juan (BJMP-San Juan).
San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora kicked-off the event together with his wife and Caring Keri Foundation founder Keri Zamora, SM Supermalls Vice President Grace Magno, designer Zarah Juan and officials from SPARK! Philippines and BJMP San Juan at the SM Mall of Asia on Monday, Dec. 2.
"The project reimagines tradition by upcycling used Barong Tagalog garments into intricate and stunning Christmas decorations. It focuses on the creative upcycling of used Barong garments, transforming them into beautiful Christmas decors while benefiting the Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) in San Juan City," Zamora said.
"By blending tradition with innovation, we aim to empower individuals, foster skills development, and promote sustainability within the community. By giving these garments a second life, the initiative aims to empower Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) through creative expression while promoting sustainability and community development," he added.
The Christmas ornaments will be available for purchase at the Zarah Juan shop and Greenhills Mall.
The proceeds of the project will benefit families of the PDLs.
