DOLE distributes P6.4-M aid to 1,012 typhoon-hit workers in Catanduanes

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has distrubuted a total of P6.4 million in cash assistance to a total of 1,012 workers in Catanduanes who were affected by super typhoon "Pepito".

DOLE Secretary Bienvenido E. Laguesma said the move was to provide immediate relief and support community rehabilitation.

The aid was distributed through the Tulong Panghanapbuhay Para sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) program, which offers emergency employment in community development projects.

In Panganiban, Catanduanes, Laguesma facilitated the release of P303,888 for 48 workers, with each receiving P5,925 for 15 days of service.

He also announced an additional P6.1 million for 964 workers from neighboring towns, which was fully disbursed within the week, for a total of P6.4 million.

The TUPAD program not only provides financial relief but also aids long-term community rebuilding, with beneficiaries engaging in activities such as debris clearing, planting disaster-resilient crops, and repacking relief goods.

These initiatives are crucial for the recovery of affected areas and strengthening local resilience against future disasters.

Laguesma emphasized the program's dual purpose, stating, “Through TUPAD, we aim to address your immediate needs while giving you the opportunity to actively participate in the recovery of your community. Your work in cleaning and repairing plays a crucial role in the restoration of Catanduanes.”

Before the year’s end, DOLE is set to disburse an additional P47.9 million in TUPAD funds to support displaced workers and further assist in the rebuilding process.

With a focus on community involvement and disaster resilience, the TUPAD program remains vital in rebuilding affected areas and helping workers regain their livelihoods while contributing to long-term recovery.
