College of St. Benilde coach Charles Tiu offered no excuses in their lackluster performance that saw the Blazers yielding to the Mapua Cardinals, 84-73, in Game 1 of their NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball finals over the weekend.
In a social media post, Tiu acknowledged their defeat by saying they were overpowered by Mapua due to their erratic plays.
“Got killed by Mapua (today). Too many turnovers. Probably too nervous,” Tiu wrote moments after the loss, referring to the crew who are in its first championship stint since two years ago.
Against Mapua, St. Benilde stumbled into 23 turnovers which the Cardinals took advantage of and translated to 34 points.
The Blazers also trailed throughout the game, with the Cardinals leading by as many as 14 points, 62-48.
In a separate interview, Tiu said they “basically gave them (Mapua) the game.”
“They outworked us. It’s a tough game fo us,” he said.
“We threw the ball away. We looked like we were passing the ball to Mapua, which I don’t understand. We’re not gonna win if we give up 23 turnovers and 34 turnover points,” he added.
Still, Tiu is not losing hope that they would be able to pick up the pieces in a must-win Game 2 on Saturday, Dec. 7, in order to forge a knockout match for the championship crown.
“We will not quit, though, and look to bounce back in Game 2,” Tiu said.
“Hoping to see more fans from the Benilde/La Salle community,” he added.
Game 3, if necessary, is on Dec. 14.
